As Director of Lawson Gems I pride myself on an in-depth and up to date knowledge of the gem and jewellery industry. I began my studies in 2003, undertaking a Bachelor of Science in the Field of Geology, this gave me a strong base on which start my gemmological academic career. From there I spent two more years studying with the Gemmological Association of Australia while starting my first independent fashion business. After completing these studies I then started work as an exploration geologist helping manage drilling programs throughout the East Coast of Australia. However, my passion for gems was too much and I returned to study with the esteemed Gemmological Association of Great Britain where over a year I completed their Accredited Gemmologist program while rising through the ranks of one Australia’s top Diamond and Coloured Gem wholesale companies. After completing this program I was offered a place in a Masters program by the Dean of Kingston University in London. I turned this down however to continue gaining industry relevant knowledge within Australia. I was then offered a job with one of the biggest jewellery retailers to assist their diamond buyer. This gave me an good understanding of not only another side of the buying process but also how large scale manufacturing is conducted.

With 5 years of industry experience under my belt I decided it was time to forge ahead with my studies and prepare myself to launch into the gem world under my own steam. I spent a year traveling some of the world’s most important gem and jewellery producing locations. This includes becoming an Accredited Diamond Grader through the Gemological Institute of America. I also updated my knowledge of coloured gems and their grading systems and synthetics and treatments of all gem types, through the Asian Institute of Gemmological Sciences. Here I also studied jewellery design and the essentials of countertop sketching. My travels included traveling to places like Hong Kong and multiple destinations throughout Mainland China to conduct market research on one of the biggest gem and jewellery markets. Further research and buying was also conducted in places such as Burma, Cambodia, Mozambique, South Africa, London, Italy and Thailand. With a strong knowledge of the market and a supply of beautiful gems I began wholesaling rough and cut gems in 2011 and now in the beginnings of 2013 www.lawsongems.com has been launched as a means to supply all aspects of the gem industry from the hobbyist gem cutter to designer jewellery buyers. I keep my knowledge up to date with regular seminar and industry tradeshow attendance. Gemmology is a constantly evolving field and without constant updates of knowledge you will be quickly left behind. Rest assured that when dealing with Lawson Gems you are in the hands of a company not just with a passion for designing and providing beautiful jewellery and gems, but also continues unending quest for greater knowledge of the gemstones we so adore. Charles Lawson (BSc Geo., FGA, FGAA, DG GIA) Director
