Bound Ammonite Fossil Pendant

This rugged pendant contains a split and polished Ammonite fossil bound and hung from a leather chord with a silver clasp. This pendant may be purchased a single piece of may be bought with its other half so as to keep the two halves of the ancient creature together.

Ammonites roamed the earth from 400 to 65 million years ago, they were closely related to current nautillus. The name "ammonite", from which the scientific term is derived, was inspired by the spiral shape of their fossilized shells, which somewhat resemble tightly coiled rams horns. Pliny the Elder (d. 79 AD near Pompeii) called fossils of these animalsammonis cornua ("horns of Ammon") because the Egyptian god Ammon (Amun) was typically depicted wearing ram's horns. Often the name of an ammonite genus ends in -ceras, which is Greek for "horn".
